Moving to France

A little while ago Tom and I took a trip to Montpellier in France so that Tom could attend a job interview and see the lab/facilities at IRD. I took a few photos on that occasion but I never posted about it.

When they offered Tom the job, we had to make a few decisions very quickly and so in a very short space of time I quit my job; we found new tenants for our German flat and we started to make plans for removalists. Critically, we also had to organise our attendance at a wedding in the Scottish Highlands and the start of my Ironhack web development course in Barcelona. Continue reading Moving to France

Ch-ch-ch-changes

Life suddenly became very interesting very quickly… I’m going to explain in more detail in the next few posts, but here’s an overview:

The first major change is that we moved to Montpellier in France. Tom is now working at IRD and we have just found a flat and moved all our belongings into it.

The second is that I quit my job (related to the first!). I feel both relieved and stressed by this change. Continue reading Ch-ch-ch-changes

Coding Kata – Mars Rover

UPDATE: The Sandbox is now deactivated

As part of the preparation for the IronHack course that I am doing in July, we have some homework… There are four modules of pre-work to complete: HTML & CSS, Unix Cli & Dev Environment, Git & Github and Ruby & OOP.

I’ve just completed the HTML & CSS section which finished with something called a “Coding Kata”, a brand new concept for me. Essentially, it’s a small coding exercise that can be repeated and solved in various ways to practice different skills.

The Kata we were assigned involved moving around a grid. It’s explained in more detail here. My solution can be found in my Sandbox. I haven’t solved it completely, but it was actually a really great challenge – and one that I think I will repeat.

German Spring

It’s been a bit of a strange weekend.

On Saturday, we had beautiful spring sunshine so we headed over to the Volksgarten for a grill session with a couple of friends. On the way, we stopped at the local “Australia Shop” because we needed Vegemite (don’t judge!) and figured we could grab some beer from home while we were there (Kölsch is ok, but it’s nice to be able to have a little variety sometimes!). We bought a sixpack of Coopers Red and not only was it totally worth it, it was possibly even cheaper than at home!

A little taste of home

We set up on the north shore of the small lake away from the larger crowds. While trying to find a nice spot, Tom made the comment that the crowded area was a little too “Apocalypse Now” which was actually pretty apt with all the grill smoke. We did find a quiet place eventually, though, and made the most of the sunshine with a little frisbee and chatting.
