We left Athens, and left Europe, bound for New Zealand but with one more city to visit: Singapore! The ideal place to break up our long journey, a friend who lives there had recently married. We hadn’t been able to make it to the wedding, but this worked out better in the end as we were able to spend much more time together on this trip than we would have at a big celebration (so selfish!).
From the airport, the newlyweds took us directly to a hawker market to kickstart our digestion after all the Greek salads we had eaten. Noodles, soup, prata, rice, juices, we ate it all!
Apart from all the food, we visited and enjoyed:
- the Botanic Gardens with their impressive array of plants and pleasant walks
- the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest at the Gardens by the Bay
- Peranakan Museum and their interesting introduction to Peranakan culture in Singapore
Our friends took us to several hawker centres and mall food courts to try lots of special dishes. They also took us to one of their family’s favourite vegetarian Indian restaurants: Komala Vilas in the Little India area of Singapore.
The one thing I found hard to deal with was the humidity: 30+C everyday and 90% humidity? I found it exhausting! There are so many amazing things to do and see and eat, but walking around was a tiring affair for me. I guess it’s something you can get used to, but I was so glad our hotel had a pool 😀
